Mayor’s Office of Culture & The Arts
Huewai holds. Wai flows. Kōkō connects.

The Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts (MOCA) exists to nurture and celebrate the cultural life of Honolulu. The brand that we created reflects this purpose. It is the visual and written expression of the stories, knowledge, and creative practices that shape our community.

At the center of the MOCA identity is the huewai, a traditional Hawaiian water vessel that symbolizes the carrying and protection of what is essential. For MOCA, it represents the cultural knowledge, stories, artistic expression, and traditions that sustain Hawaiʻi and strengthen community identity.

Wai (water) signifies life and balance, and grows into waiwai—abundance and shared value. The vessel therefore reflects both cultural inheritance and the prosperity that comes from nurturing it.

Surrounding the huewai is the kōkō, a woven carrying net symbolizing protection, connection, and collective stewardship. Together, the huewai and kōkō express a central idea: culture is something we carry together. The MOCA brand honors tradition while supporting contemporary creativity.
